Review LEITZ Pol Petrographic Microscope Ca. Late 1940s Rare Integrating Stage

The LEITZ Petrographic Microscope 386867, a marvel of optical technology from the 1940s, offers outstanding performance for geologists, mineralogists, and petrographers. Designed and manufactured by Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH, this microscope is a testament to the company's commitment to precision, excellence, and innovative design.

Boasting an ergonomic and robust build, this LEITZ Petrographic Microscope 386867 features a streamlined design, making it a favorite amongst professionals in the field. The microscope body is constructed from high-quality brass, providing durability and stability. The substantial base ensures steadiness during intense observation sessions.

Equipped with an impressive 16.5-inch long focus tube and 2.5x to 1000x magnification capability, this microscope enables detailed examination of thin sections and petrographic slides. Its wide working distance also accommodates larger specimens such as rocks and minerals.

Adding to its versatility, this microscope includes a precisely adjustable rotating stage, which offers 360-degree rotation. This feature allows for thorough examination of different areas on a slide, ensuring no detail is missed. The coarse and fine focus knobs provide accurate and smooth focus adjustments for the best possible image quality.

The complementary illumination system offers both incident and reflected light capabilities. The interior illumination keeps the edges of the slide evenly lit, while the external light source provides optimal transmitted lighting. With dimmer controls for both sources, observations can be carried out under varying light intensities to accentuate specific features.

The LEITZ Petrographic Microscope 386867 is further equipped with a Textar condenser, ensuring proper illumination of the specimen. The plan Achromat objective lenses provide clear, high-contrast images, helping to reveal even the most minute details.

In summary, the LEITZ Petrographic Microscope 386867 is an exceptional investment for professionals and hobbyists alike. With its robust build, impressive magnification capabilities, and versatile lighting system, this microscope offers unparalleled performance and the ability to discern even the smallest details in petrographic samples. A true marvel of the 1940s, this microscope continues to set the standard for petrographic observation today.

Leitz 386867 Petrographic Microscope (1940s Integrating): Pros and Cons

Pros:

1. Historical Value: This Leitz petrographic microscope is a piece of historical equipment, originating from the 1940s, which adds to its appeal for collectors and researchers in the field of geology or microscopy history.

2. Excellent Build Quality: Leitz is renowned for producing high-quality optics, and the 386867 model is no exception. With its durable construction and precision engineering, it is likely to provide long-lasting use.

3. Integrating Sphere: A unique feature of this microscope is the integrating sphere, which allows for purely quantitative analysis of the sample. It is particularly useful for studying the refractive indices of various minerals.

4. Dual Illumination: The microscope comes equipped with both incident and transmitted light sources, making it versatile for a range of microscopic examination techniques.

5. Brightfield and Polarized Light Capabilities: The Leitz 386867 can support both brightfield and polarized light microscopy, providing greater flexibility in the type of samples examined.

Cons:

1. Potential Needs for Upgrades: As this microscope is older, it may require some upgrades or restorations to operate efficiently and meet modern standards for image quality, resolution, or automation.

2. Limited Accessories: The original Leitz 386867 petrographic microscope might not include all the latest accessories or software for advanced analysis and data processing. These upgrades may need to be purchased separately.

3. Large Size: Due to its vintage and extensive design, the Leitz 386867 microscope is relatively large and heavy. This could be a disadvantage for users who are restricted in terms of laboratory or workspace size.

4. Learning Curve: Using a traditional petrographic microscope with separate brightfield and polarized light sources and an integrating sphere may take time to grasp fully, especially for beginners or those new to petrographic microscopy techniques.

Conclusion:

The Leitz 386867 petrographic microscope offers exceptional build quality, historical value, and versatility in its dual illumination systems, brightfield and polarized light capabilities, and integrating sphere. However, its age and potentially limited accessories might necessitate some upgrades and a learning curve for its users. Upon careful consideration of these aspects, the decision to buy this microscope ultimately depends on the user's budget, spatial constraints, research needs, and appreciation for historical equipment.

Recommendation:

For those looking for a high-quality, versatile petrographic microscope with a rich history, the Leitz 386867 model is an excellent choice. However, it is crucial to factor in the potential need for upgrades, the learning curve, and the larger size when making this investment. Before making a final decision, it is always recommended to examine the microscope in person and consult with a specialist to ensure it meets your specific research requirements.

Alternatively, modern petrographic microscopes with integrated features and automation options might be more suitable for users needing advanced analysis and convenience in their laboratories.

Details:

Four centering clutches included along with a pair of keys. Around 1949-50 the model AM-MOP and later CM research model's were introduced in Wetly. Very unique work Illuminati I have never seen listed. It is a Leitz item and secures to the microscope via compensatory slot.

A great cleanup project for the coming Winter months. This very nice polarized light microscope is set up for both transmission and incident. A Leitz factory fitted wood en box is included for storage of the stage. Well packed and ready for your collection or lab bench.

SN 386857 puts it around 1947 production. Calcite prism polarizes and rotating analyser. Made right after WW2 so it may not have had a model name. Most likely a very limited production run.

Includes Leitz REDYX 8V power supply for older MONLA lamp and this work light. This one could be adapted for fiber optic or LED but I think most will want to keep it original using the Mona both reflected light and transmitted with sub-stage mirror. Note the pre-war horseshoe base.
